After the Storm: A Homeowner's Roof Damage Checklist

New Jersey gets its share of strong storms, from summer thunderstorms to nor'easters that blow for days. Once the weather clears, a quick walk around your house can catch small damage before it turns into a leak.

Start from the ground. Never climb onto a wet or damaged roof yourself. Look for missing shingles, shingles that are creased or folded back, and exposed dark patches of underlayment. Check the yard and driveway for shingle pieces, and look at the gutters and downspouts for dents, sections pulled away from the house, or piles of granules at the downspout outlets.

Walk around the whole house and look at the siding too. Wind can crack or unhook vinyl panels, and flying branches leave dents and holes. A single loose panel lets rain in behind the wall, so it's worth fixing quickly even if the rest looks fine.

Then check inside. Look at the ceilings on the top floor and, if you can get into the attic safely, look at the underside of the roof deck with a flashlight. Fresh water stains, wet insulation, or drips around vents and the chimney mean water is already getting in.

Take photos of everything with the date visible, before anything gets cleaned up. If you find damage, call us for an inspection. We'll document what we find on the roof with photos, make any temporary repairs needed to stop water getting in, and give you a written estimate for the permanent fix.
